Participation
What is a clinical trial?
Research that tests whether a new medicine or treatment is safe and works, before it reaches pharmacies. Every study follows a written plan (protocol) approved by an independent ethics board.
How do I know if I qualify for a study?
Each study has its own requirements, such as age, diagnosis, lab values or current medicines. Our coordinator reviews them with you by phone, then a screening visit confirms eligibility.
Will someone explain the study before I agree?
Yes. Before anything happens, we go through the informed consent form with you in English or Spanish. You can take it home, ask questions and decide with no pressure.
What happens at the screening visit?
You sign consent, then we review your health history and do the tests the protocol requires, such as vital signs, weight, an exam and blood or urine samples.
Do I need to stop seeing my regular doctor?
No. Your regular care continues. We coordinate with your doctor when the study requires it.
How long does a study last?
From a few weeks to more than a year, depending on the study. You’ll see the full visit schedule before you sign.
Costs & compensation
Is there any cost to participate?
No. Study medicine, study visits and study tests are provided at no cost to you.
Do I need health insurance?
Usually not for study-related care. Each study’s requirements are different, so ask our coordinator about the specific study.
How does compensation work?
Many studies compensate you for time and travel. The amount and payment schedule are set by each study, approved by the IRB and written in the consent form before you decide.
Am I paid if I leave a study early?
In most studies you are compensated for the visits you completed. The consent form explains exactly how it works.
Safety & rights
Are clinical trials safe?
All research carries some risk, which is why every study is reviewed by an independent IRB and regulated by the FDA. The consent form lists known risks, and our team monitors your health at every visit.
Can I leave a study if I change my mind?
Yes, at any time and for any reason. Leaving never affects your regular medical care.
Will I get a placebo?
Some studies use a placebo and some don’t. The consent form tells you your chances before you decide.
What if I have a side effect?
Call the study team right away. The investigator evaluates every side effect, and serious ones are reported to the sponsor and the IRB. For an emergency, call 911.
Is my personal information private?
Yes. Your records are protected under HIPAA, and data sent to the sponsor is coded so it doesn’t show your name.
