Nearly half of adults in the United States have high blood pressure, and only about 1 in 4 of them has it under control. Studies test new ways to lower blood pressure and cholesterol when current medicines aren’t enough.
General requirements.
- Adults 18 and older
- A diagnosis such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol, or a history of heart disease
- Each study sets its own age range, lab values and medicine requirements

Common questions.
Do I have to stop my blood pressure medicine?
Never stop or change a medicine on your own. If a study requires a change, the study doctor explains it and it happens under medical supervision.
Can I join if I already take several medicines?
Often, yes. Some studies are designed for people whose blood pressure stays high on several medicines. The coordinator reviews your list with you by phone.
What tests are done?
Usually standardized blood pressure readings and blood tests. The consent form lists every test before you decide.
